Working Mommas [ My Collaboration with LMC Accessories]

A little while back, in my Spring Break post, I had some exciting news to share.  When the time came there was a blogger blip and I resorted to a Facebook note in lieu of blogging to share.  Well, I'm bringing that little "note" over to where it belongs... here on my Blog. *wink*  Ready for some fun?

A few months back, Melanie, a mother of 4 and the creator/owner of Lil' Miss Couture Accessories, a handmade hair accessory boutique for the 'Couture Girl Next Door', reached out to me about designing some handmade couture clip cases to hold her fabulous couture hair clips!  After some brainstorming with Melanie, I was off to do what I love, designing and sewing, of course.  I came up with two designs that I am proud to say she "loves" and the items are now for sale in her shop!

"So Chick & So Couture"

Available at www.LMCAccessories.com

Clutch with removable strap.  Holds up to 24 clips.

Clip Wallet holds up to 14 clips... perfect purse-size.
I am so honored that Melanie came to me about this project and happy to say these are handmade exclusively for Lil Miss Couture; so, if you know a "Couture Girl Next Door', head on over to Melanie's Facebook and tell her SoChick sent you!  She really has some stunning accessories... Mommies can get in on the action, too! (Hey, I've been known to put my girl's clips in my hair, why not?!)

Thanks for letting me share this with you, again (if you already read it on Facebook).  Have a wonderful weekend!

Fabulous Fabric Friday #2 [School's Out For Summer!]

Today's Fab. Fab. Friday is coming a little late in the day, oh my!  It's been a whirlwind of a week between getting SoChick's Summer '11 products ready and Trista, my eldest, finishing up 2nd grade (today!!).

Head on over to the Shop to check out what I've added for the summer, and beyond!  I'll be continuing to add some items here and there over the next few weeks.

Okay, okay... On to the fabric!!

With today being the Official start to summer vacation, everyone in my house is in high spirits as the care-free days of summer are upon us.  I can't help but be caught up in the feeling, remembering getting out of school and the freeing feeling of not having to go the next day, or the day after that, or the day after that... you get it. *wink*

This youthful-playful mood reminded me of a fabric I came across a while back which featured banner bunting and was perfect children's fabric, really... in my search for that fabric I came across this fabric:

*Thank goodness for Pinterest, I can actually keep track of stuff now!

How ADORABLE is this fabric?!  It grasps my mood perfectly, fun and playful with its primary colors, bunting *wink*, clown-girl and black poodle (we have a black Standard Poodle!)... Circus = playful = youthful... like I said, totally catching my mood!  This fabric would not only be just right for children's accessories, but how cute would it be on a little upholstered toddler-size bench or ottoman?

I really love the other fabrics that the designer, Elvina Kaplun, of New Mom Designs, has in her Etsy shop... you may be seeing some of these in my SoChick designs in the future! *Wink*

Have a wonderful Friday!  Don't forget to check out the new items in my Shop... you may recognize some of the fabrics from last week's Fabulous Fabric Friday!

See you soon!

Inspiration Workshop [Week 2: Kitchens]

Last week was the first installment of Inspiration Workshop with Gussy Sews and it was all about Handmade.  This week we're talkin' Kitchens.  What a darlin' gal that Gussy is... encouraging us to daydream about such wondrous things and all!

Every month I get Southern Living and Better Homes and Gardens magazines... and every month I dream about my ideal house... and kitchen.  Here are some inspiring photos of what I want in my kitchen:

I would love an island and a lot of natural light.  I also ♥ the white cabinets with their stainless pulls... it coordinates so well with the stainless appliances.

Another must would be a breakfast nook like this one...

... built-in benches would rock! Again, loving the natural light... *swoon*  Hey, did you notice that little drawer below the bench?! Handy storage is a must, too! The plank-style wood floors in both of these kitchens is great and lends a more casual feel.  I'm all about class and style without sacrificing comfort.  I don't want a stuffy home, but I do want something that I enjoy looking at. :-)

I imagine my forever-home (you know, the one we grow old in and all that...) to have a kitchen which is open and connected to the rest of the home, an open floor-plan.  It doesn't have to be a massive huge kitchen, but I want to be able to have my two girls in there with me, especially during holidays, etc. as a place where we can all gather to share life and memories. :-)

I am completely enjoying these posts and can't wait to see everyone else who links up with Gussy today, feel free to follow me, I'm happy to follow back and really enjoy 'meeting' everyone!

The 5 Sewing Notions I ♥ [ A Top 5 List ]

I can pretty much guarantee that every one of us who sews has a 'Top 5' list of the items they can't live without.  You know, the fun little bits and bobs that make our life as crafters, seamstresses and sewists, a little easier...

These are my Top 5 Sewing Notions that I ♥  ... I swear I'm lost without them and I'll tell you what and why:

[ Number 1 ]
My Gingher Dressmaker Scissors... with hand painted cheetah print (I know, they rock, right?!):

Nothing beats a great pair of scissors. Period.  These Ginghers have the perfect weight to them, which allows me to cut through layers of fabric like buttah!  I will never forget when I bought a cheap pair of fabric scissors:  The first time I attempted to cut fabric with fleece interfacing, the handle of the plastic scissors just snapped!  After a few expletives on my part, and some handy McGuiver work to get the scissors to finish cutting the rest of the fabric, I vowed to never cheap out again!  Good scissors are so worth the extra cash... especially since you wont have to spend your gas to drive back to the store to buy yet another set of cheap-o scissors. *wink* I actually picked this pair up from Joann's with a 40% Off coupon... woot!

[ Number 2 ]
  The Grabbit! Magnetic Pin 'Cushion'.

This thing is AWESOME, and not only because they come in pink!  With kids and pets (and a husband) in the house, I can't afford to have pins lying around.  Although I have a room dedicated as my studio, it would be no fun if I forbade everyone from coming in to visit because there may or may not be pins all in the rug... Not to worry... with my Grabbit!, if I drop a pin (or pins) I can just wave it slowly over the rug and any rouge pins are sucked right up with its super-magnet! Yeeeahhh Baby!  I have also mastered the pin-flick... which is basically where I set my Grabbit! off to the side as I'm sewing and as I remove pins from my project I just flick it towards the Grabbit and, well, it will Grab It... the pin... thus making my life easier and me more efficient, I'm convinced.

[ Number 3 ]
Titanium Needles... yes, you read right... Titanium.

Okay, I know the package says "Embroidery Needles" and I do use them for embroidery... buuuut, I also use them for plain ol' sewing, too.  These suckers are so strong, it's not even funny!  They will stitch forever, it seams, for embroidery without breaking or dulling.  When I use them to sew, the only way thus far, that I have had to change one is b/c I have bent the needle... not broken it.  (Note: my bending of a titanium needle is mainly in part because I try to force some ridiculously thick amount of fabric through my machine which is saying 'no, no, no' whilst I try to convince it 'yes, yes, yes'... not a nice way to treat one's machine, I know, and I apologize.  I love my Singer).  I honestly can't say if there are Titanium sewing needles as I've not actually looked for them... shame on me.  I'm happy with what these do, ha.  Again, a little more expensive... but worth it!!

Look at that beauty of a Titanium Needle.

[ Number 4 ]
  Seam Ripper

A seam ripper rates on my list for so many reasons... not only does it allow you undo wonky stitches, it helps make holes for snaps, poke out corners of fabric, open seams (duh), push fabric into purse frames, unclog your fabric glue bottle, tease bits of thread out from below the presser plate on your machine... shall I go on?

"To Sew is to rip" - Lisa Lam, U-Handbag

[Number 5]
The Fasturn Tool, the most awesomest fabric turning tool! (Yep, I said 'awesomest' which is more awesome than awesome, hence the '-est' at the end of it... you may use it. *wink*)

I picked up the Fasturn (links to video!), at The Sewing Expo in Atlanta, Ga, a little over two years ago.  This handy tool has helped me in so many ways.  It for sure makes life much, much, easier.  Honestly, when I first bought it I thought... "really, am I going to use this??" the answer... YES!  It's amazing how many times I've found easier ways through projects with this handy dandy tool... aside from turning tubes of fabric, I've used the wires to pull ribbon and elastic through casings, etc.  I actually showed my daughter how to use it when she made her first dress this past weekend!

I could go on and on with tools and stuff that make sewing easier for me... but that would defeat the purpose of having a Top 5 List... right?  What are some of your fav. tools?  I'd love to hear about them and learn a thing or two... I'm always up for learning about new things!  Leave a comment!  Or, if you have tried one of the above items I ♥ ... I want to hear about that, too!

 Happy Sewing!

T's First Dress! [Weekend Project #1- Wrap Up]

I hope you had a wonderful weekend, ours was fabulous!

Today I'm going to wrap up this weekend's project, which included my 8yr. old learning how to sew AND making her first dress!

We used Simplicity Pattern #2228 and some cute tutti-fruitti fabric that Trista's Grandma included in the awesome birthday sewing bundle she sent for T.

After explaining how to read a pattern and trace it in her size it was time to pin and cut our pattern from the fabric.  Trista did great with sewing on her machine.  Her lines were super straight and she needed little guidance from Momma (that's me, duh).

Tracing pattern, pinning to and cutting fabric; pinning bias; neat, straight stitching!
Trista was SO proud of herself (as I am of her, too!).  She was sure to model her dress for everyone....

Her "I made this" pose. :-)

Flip Flop ties

She has also vowed to make more dresses for herself and little sister! That's my girl. :-)
Proud Seamstress.

It was such a good time teaching my daughter to sew, I enjoy being able to pass on my knowledge and have her share in the excitement of sewing and feeling of accomplishment when you complete a project.  I would absolutely recommend the Simplicity pattern (#2228) to anyone learning to sew... it was sew easy! (And cute to boot!)

Did you do any sewing, crafting, creating, this weekend?  If so, please do share with me in the comments below!

This Chick [ A Recipe: Fried Green Tomatoes ]

Happy Sunday!  I hope it will be a relaxing day for you as you prepare for the week ahead.  I'm working on some weekend sewing today but thought I'd first hop on here to share my Farmers Market find from yesterday...Green Tomatoes! Yum!!   I think this is my main motivation for hitting up the Farmer's Market, other than the obvious reason of supporting locally made/grown.  I was so excited find three perfect green tomatoes that I knew I'd be frying up for dinner.

As I was prepping them I thought This would make for an awesome post!  So.... I decided to share my recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes.  Now, before I get started please understand that I do not claim to be from the south... I'm an Army Brat raised in Westchester County, New York... but I moved south (North Carolina) after high school and have always loved Southern Food, Culture, Architecture, and Life.  This is simply my way of enjoying Fried Green Tomatoes... I ain't Paula Deen!

Here is my recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes (my yankee-moved-south version, haha)!

What you'll need:
~ 2-3 medium, firm, Green Tomatoes
~ Cornmeal (I use House Autry plain yellow cornmeal)
~ FatFree Half n' Half (I use Land o' Lakes)
~Ol' Bay Seasoning (just a dash or so)
~ Oil for frying (and a skillet)
~Salt (optional)
~Remoulade Sauce (optional... but SO yummy!)

Start by slicing your tomatoes to about 1/3 in thick (I obviously slice at random thickness, but 1/3" is what I shoot for, ha)

Pour your Half n' Half into a shallow dish/bowl.

~Go ahead and fill the skillet with oil, about 1/2in deep, and set it to medium heat.~

Next, soak the tomato slices in the Half n' Half.
Note: You are not soaking for a long time, just long enough while you start the next step.

While the little green slices of good-ness are relaxing in their creamy bath, I add some Old Bay seasoning to my cornmeal in another shallow dish.  I use maybe 1/2tbs of seasoning to about a cup of cornmeal... give or take on your taste preference.  Some folks don't like Old Bay, and that's okay (I guess); you can just use a touch of salt and pepper.

Next, we'll take our tomato slices, one at a time, from the Half n Half bath and dredge them in the cornmeal mixture.  It is SO helpful if you use one hand to grab the wet tomato and another to coat with the cornmeal. (One for wet, one for dry... or else your fingers will be battered better than your tomatoes! Though its inevitable that you'll place wet in dry and have to wash your hands again mid-process... at least I do *wink*)

Be sure to lightly pat all around the slice to get the cornmeal to stick to the tomato... don't forget the sides!

Once all of your slices are wearing their cornmeal suits, you are ready to get fryin'!
To make sure my oil is at the right temp, I toss a pinch of cornmeal mix into it to see that it has the right sizzle.  If it doesn't sizzle, it's not hot enough; if it smokes, spits or pops... it's too hot (remove it from the heat to cool a bit and turn your burner to med-low).  I know this is not the professional chef or scientific way of doing things, I never claimed to be a chef or scientist, but it works for me. *Grin*

Handy Tools to have on hand: Handheld Strainer thinger and  Bamboo tongs
My tools for Fryin' Green Tomatoes is a handheld stainer (usually used for seafood) and some handy bamboo tongs... I find that they allow me to grip the slices well enough to flip them in the oil without ripping off the crust.
Drop about five slices into the oil and fry about 4 minutes; flip with your tongs (pictured above) and continue to cook another 3-4 minutes until golden brown.

This is my idea of cooking 'till Golden Brown.

Use the strainer to collect your slices from the oil, this style strainer really helps to let excess oil drip from the slices without risking peeling away the crunchy goodness we've created on the outside. *drool*

Set slices on a plate lined with paper towels... to soak up that extra grease.

I then will lightly sprinkle my Fried Green Tomatoes with salt (this is optional) while they are still hot with oil.  This helps the salt stick just right to our slices.

Allow to cool for a bit...be patient... really, this is important, that green tomato inside its crispy shell is hot as heck and will burn the heck outta your mouth; then you wont be able to enjoy the rest of the tomatoes... that would make for a miserable time of you watching everyone else eat up your Fried Green Tomato Goodness while you sit out because you just couldn't wait a minute... or ten.  Patience is a virtue.

I like to have a side of Remoulade sauce to lightly dip my Fried Green Tomatoes in, mostly for the zing-factor the sauce gives.  Remoulade is also known as "Cajun Mayonnaise".

Drool-worthy Fried Green Tomato Good-ness.  YUM!
Perfection! Enjoy!
It took me time to come up with my own recipe that worked for me, even though it super simple.  I don't claim for this to be the right way, but this is the way my family enjoys this southern yum-ness. *wink*

Let me know if you've tried this recipe by leaving a comment below... Enjoy!
